Where is the right place to put lateral incisors in the smile?
Anywhere the patient wants them….
There are guidelines, but the bottom line is not clear.
As dentists we choose to create a smile that pleases. The studies that impress me the most show that the incisal edges of the maxillary anterior teeth should parallel the arc of the lower lip. The Damon courses emphasize that the maxillary centrals and cuspids should be at one level and the lateral incisors slightly more gingival.
I feel that narrow faces should have a more curved dental arc and wide faces a more straight dental arc.
From the pictures I chose I have preferences. I don’t like the position of the lateral incisors for Barbara Waters or Hillary Clinton. I do like the position for Bionce, Tira Banks and the model in the middle. All three of these celebrities have lateral incisors slightly shorter than the central incisors. Although I don’t know this for a fact, I believe the only natural smile is the model in the middle because the upper right lateral is rotated.
So, that’s the way I roll!
